Creating Roses From Flower Punch

Paper Flower Tutorial

I have been asked many times to show how to make this very simple flower tutorial, I actually saw a similar-ish one being made a few years ago, when I attended a small local crafts event and when I came home, got straight to making my own version (so that I wouldn't forget) I adjusted it here and there adding my own tweaks to it. I've been making them ever since for projects (for example recently here) and workshops and now finally, Ive put it in writing (and pictures) and alas my paper flower tutorial is born!!

I have witten step by step notes and taken lots of pictures to match, in the hope that it fully explains and covers it, but email me if you have any probs. or need me to explain further. You can also click on the picture to enlarge it. So here goes.....

1. Here are the main materials you will need; paper – I have used just plain red construction paper (of course you can use any colour!), dries clear glue, large 6 petal flower punch (or any six petal shape, sizzix, craft robo etc etc), glitter or stickles glitter, Fired brick distress ink pad, small piece of cut ’n dry foam and a cocktail stick (image 1)

2. Punch out 3 of the flower punch, make folds in them as in the picture to obtain the center (image 2)



3. In the first flower, just snip down the side of one of the petals to the middle, in the second flower punch cut away one petal and in the third flower cut away 2 of the petals (image 3)



4. At this stage using your cut ‘n dry foam with the fired brick ink pad, distress all the flower petals around the edges (image 4, 5)




5. Then using your dries clear glue, place some glue onto one of the petals of each of the three flowers and glue one petal over the other as in the picture - make sure you do this on the wrong side of the petals so that when they are glued down you do not cover the sides you have just distressed - (image 6,7,8)





6. Using your cocktail stick, curl all of the petals of each flower, of which there should be 3 (image 9,10,11)





7. You will now need to snip pointy ends off the two smaller flowers – do not snip the biggest flower as this is your base flower (image 12,13,14)





8. Then take the largest flower and add some dries clear glue to the middle, place the next size down flower and place on top, again, place some dries clear glue to the middle of that and place the smaller flower on top and just hold them in place a few second for the glue to adhere. (image 15,16,17,18)






9. With the two petal (i.e the heart shaped piece) again with the cocktail stick curl the petal edges and then keep one curled but, straighten out the other (image 19,20)


Now bring the shape together to make a funnel shape, but not too tight (image 21)

and place some clear dries glue to adhere the edge in place (image 22,23) (if at this stage the straight side of the petal is too straight, using your cocktail stick just gently curl that petal)

and as before snip the pointy end off (image 24)



10. Finally for the single petal, using the cocktail stick, curl the petal at the sides this time (image 25,26)


and also snip the pointy end off (image 27)

and place it in the middle of your flower, securing it in place with some dries clear glue as before (image 28)


The rose is almost complete, now for the final touches.

11. Cut out two leaves either with a die cut, or a punch or even draw it by hand and cut it out, I have used my wizard flower set die in this instance, but any similar leaf shape will do (image 29)

with a bone folder give the leaf some shape (image 30)

decide where you want to place them add some dries clear glue and adhere them in place (image 31,32,33)

12. And finally take your stickles glitter and randomly place some around the petals or even add some dots of glossy accents to resemble raindrops (image 34,35)

YOUR FLOWER IS COMPLETE - now you have the basis of constructing you can adapt it to suit your projects, I have made smaller ones, different colour, different papers i.e patterened & tissue papers, distress some of the petal edges with a distress tool for a worn look it goes on and on......

Creating Violets Using the Butterfly Punch

Spring Violets

I've always liked the vibrant colors of violets, and when I saw a picture of a card made with this technique, I knew I had to try it. I don't remember who it was that first created these flowers but as soon as I do I will link their card here.

To make these flowers use our butterfly punch and watercolor cardstock. Punch out 2 butterflies. Color the centers with Summer Sun Marker and the outside with Lovely Lilac. Don't completely color the cardstock with your markers. Just scribble along edge and the centers then use the Aqua Pen to watercolor and blend. It's that simple. I do recommend water coloring the centers then water coloring the edges last. Layer the butterflies, connect with a brad (I used black) and glue/tape to your card. You could also try watercolor paint, or watercolor crayons.

To make the oval and scallop oval layers I used my Colluzzle for the Summer Sun and then cut a strip of Lovely Lilac and scalloped the edge with the Scallop Edge punch. Cut snips into the scallop strip (the bottom edge, not the scallop edge) and lay it on to the back edge of the Summer Sun layer. Adhere with our sticky strip to get a good hold.

It may not look that easy but it certainly was. The beautiful pansy flowers are made on Shimmery White paper using the re-inker spread technique. First I punched out two butterflies for each flower. Then with a fine mist spritzer spray water on the butterflies. One they are nice and wet go around the edges with a paint brush loaded with re-inker. I used Elegant Eggplant re-inker. Be sure to let your flowers dry before trying to put brads through the middle or you will be starting over, lol (don't ask). The leaves are the five petal flower punch.

Directions

1) Open one of the gum packets and remove the gum. Set it aside for now.

2) Tear the cardboard holder apart and flatten it out to make a pattern. I did cut off the little tab at the top of their package since I'd be closing mine with Velcro.

3) Lay the pattern on a piece of card stock and trace with a pencil, pen, or Marker.

4) Cut out the traced card stock.

5) Using the pattern as a guide, score where needed.

6) Lay the cut out, scored card stock on your work surface so the trace marks are facing up.

7) Press the VersaMark Pad all over the card stock surface until it is completely inked up.

8) Lay the inked up card stock in the Powder Pal inked side up. Sprinkle on Clear Embossing Powder. Tap off excess powder into the tray.

9) Lay the powdered card stock on your work surface so the powdered side is up.

10) Use a Bone Folder to draw random lines all over the surface of the powdered card stock by dragging the tip of the Bone Folder through the powder.

11) Tap the loose embossing powder into the garbage. Do NOT reuse it!

12) Heat the card stock with the Heat Tool until all the powder is melted and shiny.

13) Fold on your score lines and place with the embossed side down on your work surface.

14) Lay the gum inside the holder.

15) Lightly adhere the side flaps to the gum. Also fold the tiny tabs at the bottom in and secure them with adhesive.

16) Put small strips of Sticky Strip on the side flaps as shown.

17) Remove the protective backing (red) from the Sticky Strip pieces and fold the bottom flap up and secure in place.

18) Flip the wallet over so the embossed side is face up and lay the top flap on the mats from the Mat Pack. Place an embellishment flower of your choice on top of the flap so it overlaps the bottom edge by just a tiny bit. Use the Paper-Piercing Tool to poke a hole through the center of the flower and card stock. Insert a brad of choice and secure on back side.

19) Flip the wallet back over and put one side of a Velcro piece over the prongs of the brad. Put the other side of the Velcro piece on the first Velcro piece and remove the protective backing. Close the flap of the wallet and press hard to secure the Velcro piece on the other side exactly where you want it.

Tips

You can use any color of card stock and any type of embellishment on the flap that you'd like.

Make sure your VersaMark Pad is well inked so that the embossing powder will stick to the card stock easily.

By embossing on the traced side of the card stock, you'll hide any trace marks that weren't cut off.

You may have noticed that I did not emboss some of the side flaps. I deliberately left the parts that would be covered by the bottom flap of the wallet un-embossed since the Sticky Strip sticks better on plain card stock.

Just draw random, squiggly lines with the Bone Folder through the embossing powder. Let some of the lines cross. You are trying to make it look like a piece of leather!

Do NOT reuse the powder that you pull up with the Bone Folder when drawing your lines. It's already saturated with VersaMark and will not work well if you try to reuse it. Just tap it off into the garbage.

You can refill your wallet with gum at any time!

Make a slightly larger wallet and it will hold business cards. Or, make an even bigger one to hold feminine hygiene products in style!
